50 in a year?

.

I've decided as a way to motivate myself to read more, I am going to start a blog that is dedicated to pushing myself to do so.  I am officially going to start my "year of reading" on July 1st, 2010.  My goal is to read 50 books in a year.  Maybe this seems like a small number to some and impossible to others.  I'm honestly not sure how it is going to work out for me.  I don't read nearly as often as I would like to.  I'm hoping by setting my goal at approximately one book per week, I should be able to hammer through a few more than I have been lately.  I mean if I post this goal for you all to see, I have to hold myself to it, right?

I think I'm going to take the next couple of weeks to finish up the several books that I currently have started so that I can start fresh on July 1st.

Thoughts?  Is my goal reachable?  Any suggestions for good books for me read in the upcoming year?  I have shelves of books that I have yet to read, but  I always prefer recommendations from others!  (Also, please note any books that you think I absolutely should NOT read.  GREATly appreciated!)

I will add that I am also willing to read books that you, my (currently zero, hopefully soon to be many) followers want to read yourselves, but want a review from someone else first.  I will test the books out for you!

My plan is to keep you updated on what I'm reading, as well as how I feel about what I read!  Enjoy!

What the fuck? Seriously, I just today made this goal for myself. Except the goal for me is 52, and it's by the end of 2010. I've already read roughly 28 thus far, so I figure I can probably hit 52 before the year is up.

But really. JUST today. Are you tapping into my brain via wireless? I don't understand. Stop it.

This is Alice, in case you were not aware. Also, I'd give you book recs, but considering we read the same thing simultaneously anyway, I don't think it's necessary.

Ha! Agreed! That's awesome. I thought about doing a goal for the year, but haven't been keeping track. I also thought about doing 52, but thought I'd better give myself a couple of extra weeks since I've been such a slacker!

I would like to do this goal for myself but we all know with grad school coming up unless you'd all like to read reviews about text books on museum stuff... I can't get through my stack of 'must reads' because everybody keeps getting me MORE books. I'll probably go through a strictly Abraham Lincoln period thanks to my sister!

I am currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It's really good! It's also super long, like 2200 pages or something, according to my nook. (Which could be difficult to finish in a week...) I'm just over halfway through it, so I'll let you know if the end makes me change my mind, but I was up until 2:00 this morning reading it, if that tells you anything. I would enjoy your suggestions as well!

Well I hope you like it because I totally own it Jana! I just haven't read it yet. Maybe that can be one of my reads. Definitely let me know what you think. ALSO, how do you like your nook? I'm very much on the fence about how I feel about any of the electronic reader deals. It would definitely help with some clutter issues but I am such a tactile person that I really like having an actual book in my hands!

Pam! You love ABE! You're welcome! :)

I will let you know what I think of the book once I'm done. I'm hoping to finish it this weekend on the way to and from Chicago. On the Amtrak. Assuming I'm not puking.

I absolutely love my nook. It's so convenient to be able to just carry that rather than several books and it's nice because it weighs the same regardless of how much the book you're reading weighs. :) The screen is easy to see and the touch screen part on the bottom to scroll through menus is nice. The battery life is pretty good and if you put it in airplane mode it lasts even longer. The other nice thing is that you can put mp3s and photos on it as well so you can personalize it, and listen to music while you read!

But I CAN'T listen to music while I read because I want to sing along! :)

Thanks for all of the info. on the nook. It would definitely be super handy for travelling purposes. Ugh. I want. :)

Hi Jenni! You should pick up anything by Christopher Moore. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's childhood pal (hilarious buddy/adventure story), A Dirty Job (average guy becomes Death), or Fool (the story of King Lear as told through the eyes of the Jester) are some of my favorites!

I've heard about Lamb & thought it looked interesting. I will look into these. Thanks!!!
